Our partner, Child Empowerment Programme (CEP), is a grassroots organization that seeks to empower children in rural eastern Uganda to reach their full potential. Through educational and community development programs, CEP supports them to become leaders in the social-economic transformation of their villages. To mitigate COVID-19 effects at schools, CEP Uganda provides internet access connections to 50 devices for its staff and students. This connectivity, financially supported by Pangea Giving, facilitates communication among teachers and students, and is an essential source of information to support students in their assignments. Here is the story of Mr. Waiswa Nelson, a teacher and...[ Read More ]
"Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present."  (Albert Camus) Pangea's giving circle model allows its members to have direct involvement in every aspect of the relationship with our partners. We understand that financial support in a vacuum is not enough. That is why we constantly ask ourselves about other ways to support and share our knowledge and skills to help our partners thrive. This is a two-way path full of reflection and lessons that could not work without clear communication between partners and members. A pivotal figure to establish this sought trusting and open communication...[ Read More ]

In 2021, Pangea committed to gaining greater perspective and depth to our grantmaking process through identifying trusted leaders from our alumni partners and known local experts. This commitment has coalesced into our new pod advisers program, through which we have identified three wonderful leaders and long-time friends of Pangea to help us think through our grant making, serve as our eyes on the ground as we support current partners and help provide context for the latest developments in the regions where we fund. In July, we welcomed Elvia Raquec, Programs Director for Women's Justice Initiative, as our first pod adviser....[ Read More ]

In our latest Member Spotlight feature, we heard from longtime member Bob Ness. How did you first hear about / get involved with Pangea? After 9/11, a few friends of mine invited a group of people together to consider the question: “Where does the US fit in the world right now and how do we deal with the crisis in relationships we have with people around the world?” Allan Paulson, Linda Mason and others had the idea of forming Pangea. My wife, Maryann, wanted to get involved from the beginning and pulled me in. I participated in a formational meeting...[ Read More ]

Letter from Nick Dreher

June 14, 2021

Dear Pangea community,I am writing to formally share my plans to leave my role as Communications & Operations Manager with Pangea Giving at the end of August 2021. I have accepted a doctoral fellowship from Ryerson University and will be studying at their center for migration and integration. My focus will be on the relationship between migration, culture/identity and urban space. It's a new direction but also in ways a culmination of my previous experiences and my more recent work here in Seattle. This is an exciting next step, but also a bittersweet moment personally as I have great appreciation for the opportunity Pangea has...[ Read More ]
Dear Pangea community,I hope this message finds you safe and well as we begin to emerge from our pandemic hibernation. The coronavirus impacted all of us this past year as we searched for new ways to stay connected and continue our work.  Our 2020-2021 Annual Report highlights some of the challenges and successes we experienced during this unprecedented year. It also outlines our new 2021 grants, as well as some initiatives we’ll be tackling this coming year.  I am proud of the work Pangea is doing—and especially the work of our partners around the globe. Thank you for your interest and support of Pangea...[ Read More ]
Last month, Pangea staff and members participated in an event on empathy-driven peacebuilding organized by our Cambodia partner Women Peace Makers. The event was an opportunity for us to reflect on the central role of empathy in our work as an organization—developing an understanding between people in different corners of the world with different stories and experiences.  Women Peace Makers also shared their latest video production focused on interethnic understanding. See the introduction and video below from our partner. The key to a colorful world is Empathy. Taisong is a mixed ethnic Khmer/Vietnamese high school student who lives in Cambodia...[ Read More ]
