Pangea welcomes Green Community Volunteers (GCV) as one of our new partners in Southeast Asia. This organization was founded in 2009, and operates in the Xiangkhouang Province, northeast of Laos. GCV is the only local group in Laos that has been founded and run by indigenous women, and it seeks to empower communities on environmental issues such as biodiversity preservation through art and cultural exchanges. This organization was recommended to Pangea by Women Peace Makers, one of our longtime partners. CIWA was founded in 2019 at the initiative of 37 indigenous women and 7 men, as an organization committed to gender equity and the protection of fundamental rights of indigenous women. We finalize the series of articles introducing our Pod Advisors with the profile of Joshua Machinga from Common Ground for Africa, Kenya. Joshua Machinga earned his degree in agronomy at Manor House Agricultural College in Kitale. In 2019, Women in Sustainable Enterprises (WISE) became one of our newest partners. WISE was founded to address economic uncertainty and sexual exploitation of women fishmongers in wetland villages around Lake Victoria by promoting environmentally sustainable enterprises that empower women and strengthen the community.  The short video below highlights WISE's mission and some of the beneficiaries of their Girl Advocacy Leadership Series (GALS) project, which aims to empower adolescent girls and young women at risk through leadership development and training on advocacy and financial literacy. Many of the communities we support have suffered from the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns that have closed economies and school systems. Our partners have been responding to address the evolving needs of these communities. Taa'Pi't, our partner based in San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala, has started offering educational programs on nutrition and health through local television programs to reach families social distancing at home. Our partner Taa'Pi't works with indigenous families in the Lake Atitlán region of Guatemala to reintroduce traditional foods, cooking techniques and agricultural practices based on Ru Kuuyx qa Way qa Kuyaa, the Mayan expression for directing recognition, acceptance and gratitude to the vital energy that arrives in each home in the form of seeds, vegetables, fruits and liquids. 2020 Grants Announced!

In 2020, Pangea Giving is proud to award $111,410 in grants to 16 partners. After receiving recommendations from our three regional grant pods, the Board approved our final grants on February 23. Grants are being transferred to partners in March and early April. Latin America The Latin America Pod awarded $36,667 in funds to five organizations operating in Oaxaca, Mexico or Guatemala. These organizations are all returning grantees and address issues including gender equity and women empowerment, gender-based violence prevention, sexual and reproductive health education, nutrition, and indigenous rights and cultural education. In January 2020, Pangea Giving released a report "Funding Climate Action: Partnering with Grassroots Organizations." The report surveys the current landscape of climate philanthropy, the important role small funders like Pangea Giving plays in the fight against climate change and offer recommendations for what next steps may be.
