Our partner, Child Empowerment Programme (CEP), is a grassroots organization that seeks to empower children in rural eastern Uganda to reach their full potential. Through educational and community development programs, CEP supports them to become leaders in the social-economic transformation of their villages. To mitigate COVID-19 effects at schools, CEP Uganda provides internet access connections to 50 devices for its staff and students. This connectivity, financially supported by Pangea Giving, facilitates communication among teachers and students, and is an essential source of information to support students in their assignments. Here is the story of Mr. Waiswa Nelson, a teacher and...[ Read More ]

A 4G Connection to Uganda

March 25, 2021

Located in southeast Uganda, Child Empowerment Program (CEP) works to create a community in which all vulnerable children are able to reach their full potential in life by providing educational, civic and economic opportunity. Pangea Giving has supported CEP since 2018 and in 2021 we awarded them an operating grant for $9,920. The following is a letter of thanks from their Executive Director, Robert Kalulu, on how Pangea funding helped to bring 4G internet access to the community. As an ordinary primary school teacher at Nawanende SDA Primary school, I was forced to learn and use computer and internet by my...[ Read More ]
Updates on the CEP-Uganda COVID-19 Response Project As the coronavirus pandemic arrived in East Africa in March, several of our local partners focused on new programs to strengthen community resilience. In April, Child Empowerment Programme Uganda (CEP) established a COVID-19 task force and began working with local leaders and police in Kamuli District to implement a three-part health and sanitation program. Executive Director Robert Kalulu shared the following update on their recent work. Production and Distribution of Face Masks CEP hired 4 graduates of their tailoring program to make face masks and participate in distribution around the region. This is...[ Read More ]
In April, we reached out to our grant partners to offer our support and flexibility with their grant funds in an effort to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these strong community leaders have already responded, quickly pivoting their work to address community needs. Below are a few examples: Muditar in Myanmar has suspended Pangea-funded activities until June 1 when the stay at home order is expected to end. Instead, they are focusing the work of Village Development Teams (VDTs) in villages to set up temporary quarantine areas for migrants returning to the village; some are tarpaulin or...[ Read More ]
Sarah* is one of a dozen children in her family in Namagera village, Jinja district, Uganda. At 16 years old, she dropped out of school because her family lacked funds and the government-aided free secondary school was too far away from her house to walk. When a local organization announced a scholarship program in her village, she promptly interviewed and impressively landed the scholarship. However, six months into the scholarship program, Sarah became pregnant and dropped out of school. After having the baby, Sarah could not re-enroll in secondary school because she had no one to care for her child...[ Read More ]
My long-held dream of visiting East Africa – and more importantly, meeting and learning about the people who live there – came to fruition during a recent Pangea Giving site visit. For 3 weeks our team of four immersed ourselves in the social, environmental, cultural and economic realities of rural life in Kenya, Uganda and Burundi. I returned home profoundly impacted and humbled. A few examples: Who would have the courage to build a desperately needed maternity center in a rural village with no access to a reliable water source? Under the leadership of Wendo Aszed, Dandelion Africa is months...[ Read More ]
Knowing from our own experience that non-profit leaders often benefit from having a safe space to share experiences and coach each other in addressing challenges, members of Pangea’s Africa Pod asked some of our partners if they would find it useful to meet with one other. The answer was yes. So in 2016 we set aside a small amount from our grant pool to help our partners come together at the Dandelion Africa location near Nakuru, Kenya, in what we called the East Africa Leadership Forum (EALF). The intention from the start was that the forum belonged entirely to the...[ Read More ]
