Did you know that the people who will suffer most from climate change in the coming decades are the ones who have done the least to cause it? It’s widely acknowledged[1] that the effects will be felt most severely by vulnerable populations in what is known as the Global South—non-industrialized countries near or south of the equator. Pangea’s partners are found in those countries, and they are already suffering—from longer periods of extreme heat, from more frequent and longer droughts, from unpredictable rains and extreme storms, from crippling floods. On March 17, nearly 50 Pangea members and friends gathered to...[ Read More ]
Bio-Gardening Innovations or BIOGI has been a Pangea Giving partner since 2013. BIOGI works with small farmers to promote the adoption of sustainable agriculture methods including agroforestry, permaculture, and biodiversity conservation. As part of our recent educational event, Climate Change in the Global South, we debuted a video made in partnership with BIOGI to highlight their work and the role they play to help small farmers in Western Kenya secure their livelihoods and adapt to the changing climate. Enjoy!
Knowing from our own experience that non-profit leaders often benefit from having a safe space to share experiences and coach each other in addressing challenges, members of Pangea’s Africa Pod asked some of our partners if they would find it useful to meet with one other. The answer was yes. So in 2016 we set aside a small amount from our grant pool to help our partners come together at the Dandelion Africa location near Nakuru, Kenya, in what we called the East Africa Leadership Forum (EALF). In 2018, Pangea Giving is excited to support a collaborative project grant between two long-term East African partners – SaCoDe and BIOGI. The idea for the Amagara Meza (“good health” in Kirundi) project was born at the East Africa Leadership Forum (EALF) in 2017. After meeting and learning from one another at the first EALF meeting in 2016, Francoise Nibizi of SaCoDe (Burundi) asked Ferdinand Wafula of BIOGI (Kenya) to present an introductory training following the 2017 EALF meeting in Bujumbura, Burundi. The 2-day training was held for 20 farmers in Gatumba (on the outskirts of Bujumbura) directly after the...[ Read More ]
Pangea Giving co-founder, Allan Paulson, recently returned from 15 days in Kenya visiting four of our current partners, two for the first time, and ‘interviewing’ a couple of other prospective partner organizations. Following are his impressions:  I arrived in Nairobi a few days after the end of the terrorist siege at Westgate Mall, not without misgivings. But I was met by a familiar face, Raphael Okumu, a long-time Pangea partner and iLEAP fellow. Raphael accompanied me on all the site visits and he opened his home to me in Nakuru. His insights were invaluable. Since I have been to Kenya four...[ Read More ]
